Tour description

This high-altitude hike set amidst glorious glacial scenery follows the short yet technically challenging path between the Felskinn mountain station and the Britannia mountain hut (please consult the tourist and cableway offices for information on the condition of the trail). The initial part of the trail crosses the Chessjen glacier and continues on to the Egginerjoch. From there, the path branches off to the right and heads south to the Britannia mountain hut at 3,030 m a.s.l. Here, hikers are rewarded with an unforgettable view over the Allalin glacier and the Mattmark area and its eponymous reservoir – Europe’s largest natural reservoir.

The Britannia mountain hut was first built in 1912, and underwent renovations in 1997 to transform it into a new, modern hut. It is the most-visited Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) hut in the Alps and the starting point for the famous Haute Route. The majority of the trail is over glaciers, and it is therefore only suitable for hikers with appropriate equipment.

Alternative A: Plattjen - Heidenfriedhof - Chessjengletscher -Brittania mountain hut
This demanding mountain hike starts at the mountain station of the Plattjen gondola lift. The trail sets off in a southerly direction to the Brandgrabe viewpoint and continues along the bases of the Mittaghorn and the Egginer to Heidefriedhof. After a short descent, hikers reach an open area with a glacial lake. From here, the path continues along the edge of the Chessjen glacier and finishes at the Britannia mountain hut. (4.2km; 460Hm; 2.5h)

Alternative B: Saas-Almagell - Zer Meiggeru - Heidenfriedhof - Chessjengletscher - Britannia mountain hut
This trail begins in Saas-Almagell and leads first to the Zermeiggern chapel and past the equalising reservoir before it branches off to the right and the steep and rather difficult ascent begins up over the Tschingle. The path leads between the rocky ridges of the Blattbach over Roosse to Mälliegge and on to the next waypoint located next to Heidefriedhof at 2,732 m a.s.l. The trail continues over an open area, past a glacial lake and along the edge of the Chessjen glacier. The remainder of the trail leads over glacial terrain to the Britannia mountain hut. (7.2km; 1360Hm; 4h)

Ask at the tourist office or the cableway stations for information on the condition and opening times of the high-Alpine paths.

Pay attention to the cableway timetable.

Make sure you plan enough time for the hike and be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and good outdoor clothing.
