This itinerary is a good follow-up to the previous one (the Valley of the Sun). It starts where the first one finishes high up on the Passo del Lucomagno. From there it’s a two hour walk through the Passo del Uomo as far as the Alpe di Piora and the Centro di Biologia Alpina (international centre for the study of ecosystems). The Alpine scenery around Piora is overwhelmingly beautiful, and in the middle of it nestles the Alpeggio(mountain summer pasture), well known for its delicious cheese, which is one of the best in Ticino. Another hour walking through this enchanting landscape will take you past the lake of Ritom to the Funicolare di Ritom, one of the steepest funiculars in the world. At Altanca you have a choice of three different herb field treks. The first, northwards to Brugnasco (Variante A) takes an hour on foot, and offers you the opportunity of visiting a cultivated herb field. The second, south, follows the Strada Alta through Deggio (Romanesque chapel of S. Martino which dates back before the year 1000. Late Gothic frescoes inside, one of which is dedicated to san Martino in the act of dividing his cloak with the beggar) then Lurengo and Osco as far as Calpiogna where there’s another field of medicinal plants. This walk takes about 5 hours.
The third alternative is the descent from Piora to Piotta , then public transport up the opposite side of the Valle Leventina as far as Rodi Fiesso where there are more herb fields. Don’t miss the Dazio Grande at Rodi. Recently restored, it dates back to the 16th C. From Calpiogna the road leads back to Biasca. On the way, make time for a visit to Chironico with its medieval past, notable in the towered ‘Casa dei Pedrin’ (14th C) and the ancient church of SS. Ambrogio and Maurizio (built on the foundation of an earlier church from 8th or 9th C), now a real jewel of Romanesque architecture with twin apses and internal frescoes. Another jewel of the Leventina is the village of Giornico with its delightful town centre and Romanesque church of S. Nicolao (12th –13th C).
