The shortest part of this trail takes you from the shady Nordholz and Bruggenwäldi into the open area above Laupen. At the fork in the road one passes the Rotwasser-Bächlein, where two brothers, because of their religious beliefs, mauled each other so badly that the water turned red. Then you go along the Flurstrasse in the direction of Diezikon, turning left, however, at the next fork toward Morgen/Töbeli. High above Diezikon you go along the road and take pleasure in the splendid view to the south, where the nearby Alps of Glarus and Schwyz rise up above the Linth plain. In the next section of woods the street becomes a forest trail and follows the Diezikon brook, where you will find an outdoor fireplace near a small waterfall.
Now begins the hardest part of this trail: the steep climb up to the edge of the woods is made easier by a zigzag path and wooden stairs. After passing the Briggis pond you’ll cross a little upland moor and meet up with the Bannholz-Höhenklinik trail. This takes you gradually uphill via the Chrinnentobel to the buildings that used to be the sanatorium and are now the rehabilitation center for the people of Zurich. From here you walk a few meters along the street toward Hittenberg and turn left before reaching the highest point, onto the hiking trail to the Lauf Restaurant. Now you’ll be on the possibly most beautiful section of the hike: from a large, natural viewing terrace you can drink in the magnifi-cent sight of the Alpine chain from the Speer to the famous Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger to the west. Behind the Lauf the trail descends steeply into the woods above the sanatorium road and through the next bit of woods down to the plain of the Steig. At this point you will meet up once again with the Rot-wasser brook. As you already know the way from the start of the hike, you’ll find your way back to the end of the hike in nearby Nordholz.
