Tour description

From Aosta to Ivrea, the Via Francigena follows more or less the river «Dora Baltea». However, this is not equivalent to «no ascents», because the trail avoids roads and railway tracks and therefore follows the northern flank of the valley, which results in quite some ascents anyway. A highlight of this stage is the « Castello dei Signori di Quart», whose oldest parts date back to 1185 a.Chr. This fortress was owned by the Quart family until 1327, now it belongs to the community.
Nus is the largest agglomeration between Aosta and Châtillon. Situated about half-way, and is a suitable place for a break. Short after Nus, we have a perfect view on Fénis with its Castle from the 12th century, situated south of the river Dora Baltea. At Châtillon, we will look for a suitable lodging as well as for a nutritive dinner. However, the old part of this place and the San Pietro church will be of interest as well.

Note(s)

The «Via Francigena» is one of the 3 main christian pilgrimage trails of the Middle Ages, the main axis leading from Canterbury to Rome. This documentation currently covers the most frequented section from Lausanne to Rome.
